As we wrap up our Behind the Software series, we’re excited to introduce Cari Voor, a Team Lead at gWorks. Cari has been with gWorks for just three months, but she’s already making a big impact. With a passion for problem-solving, a love of strategy, and a drive to make government technology more efficient, Cari embodies what it means to be an engineer. Her story is the perfect way to close out our series and celebrate the talent behind our software.
From Windows 95 to Software Engineering
For Cari, technology has always been a source of curiosity and creativity. When her family got their first personal computer with Windows 95, she was hooked. Playing the classic Oregon Trail and exploring early web pages like Davesite.com inspired her to learn programming.
Her defining moment came in high school when she took a Q-Basic class. One of her first programs made the computer emit a series of random beeps—much to the annoyance of her mom. That small but powerful moment solidified her path: engineering was more than a skill; it was a creative outlet. “Ultimately, to be an engineer is to be a builder,” Cari explains. “It calls for creativity at every level.”
A Strategic Mindset for Smarter Work
As a Team Lead, Cari’s days are a mix of problem-solving, collaboration, and strategy. She checks in on Meter Data Management tickets, attends team standups, and finds ways to improve cross-team workflows. Beyond coding, she focuses on refining processes, removing roadblocks for her team, and helping define work priorities alongside Product Owners.
“Strategy is important to me—I want us to work smarter while continuing to work hard,” she says. Cari believes in breaking problems into smaller pieces, collaborating with her team, and using test-driven development to introduce changes with confidence. For her, software engineering is both an art and a science, and she enjoys balancing both aspects.
Powering Small-Town Communities with Better Tech
One of the biggest reasons Cari joined gWorks was its mission: using technology to simplify local government processes. “I love that we eliminate the noise and overhead of outdated systems, so local governments can focus on actually serving their communities,” she says.
Looking to the Future
While she’s still new to gWorks, Cari sees incredible opportunities ahead. She values gWorks’ emphasis on learning and professional growth. “Every day, I learn new things about our products, processes, and challenges across departments,” she says. “There’s no shortage of interesting work to be done!”
